Phil's new toy: Mickelson adds 2-iron for majors

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Phil Mickelson once played a U.S. Open without a driver in his bag and a Masters with two drivers, so by comparison his equipment tinkering for this week’s U.S. Open is not exactly groundbreaking but it is interesting nonetheless.

Mickelson switched to an 18-degree driving iron last week on his way to a tie for third at the FedEx St. Jude Classic as he prepared for this week’s U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, a hard and bouncy links-like layout.

“That club will be in the bag for a while. I love it,” said Mickelson, who swapped out his 5-wood to add the Callaway 2-iron to his bag.
