Muirfield votes to admit women, restored to The Open rota

Muirfield has been restored to The Open Championship rota after voting to admit women members.

The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, which owns and runs the East Lothian club, announced on Tuesday morning that the rule change has been passed by 498 votes to 123.

It was in May 2016 that the Royal & Ancient, which runs golf's oldest major championship, removed Muirfield from the host venue rotation.

A statement from R&A at the time read: "The Open is one of the world's great sporting events and going forward we will not stage the Championship at a venue that does not admit women as members.
