Matt NeSmith shoots 65 to set early pace in U.S. Amateur stroke play

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — Aside from a five-minute downpour early Monday afternoon, conditions were near perfect for the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur at Olympia Fields Country Club, and the opening groups took advantage.

Seventeen players fired sub-par rounds on Olympia Fields’ North and South courses in the morning wave. The top 64 scores after Tuesday’s second round will advance to match play.

Matt NeSmith, the recent Players Amateur champion, set the early pace with a 5-under 65 on the South Course. Lee McCoy, a Georgia senior from Athens, Ga.
