TROON, Scotland — His day began at what felt like was the middle of the night, Jon Curran arriving at Royal Troon at 4:45 a.m. Thursday.
By the time he got onto the golf course it was more than 12 hours later — and even then he was only behind the ropes.

“I took my chances. That’s what happens,” Curran said after a long, anxious week ended without a spot into his first trip to a British Open. “Honestly, it happened to me, but it happens every week to somebody.
