George McNeill discovers enough game to set early pace in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The leaderboard at the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach often resembles Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates. That is, at day’s end, you really never know what you’re going to get.

George McNeill, who captured one of his two career PGA Tour victories here in 2012, has missed the cut in six of his eight starts in 2015-16. Frankly, he has not been very enthused about playing golf. But he was your early Day 1 leader at 7-under 65.

On his heels from the morning wave was a group that included defending champion Alex Cejka, who is competing with an injured right hand; Aaron Baddeley, who is trying to make his ballstriking as simple as his putting; and Frank Lickliter II, who doesn’t get too many PGA Tour starts these days.
