SEA ISLAND, Ga. – Playing in the day’s final group with virtually no knowledge of Ocean Forest Golf Club, Taylor Funk birdied his 16th hole of the day to take a one-stroke lead at the Jones Cup Invitational on Friday.
Funk, the son of eight-time PGA Tour winner Fred, rebounded from a bogey at the par-5 sixth hole (he started on No. 10) with his birdie at the seventh for a 3-under 69 on a cold and windy day.
“I think I hit 14 greens [in regulation] so it felt easier then it should have,” said Funk, who only managed to play four holes on Thursday to prepare.
