Fifty years after Dave Marr won PGA, the legend endures

Everyone loved Dave Marr.

When a memorial service for Marr was held in his hometown of Houston upon his death in 1997, one journalist friend said, “If they’re letting everyone go who wants to, they’d better hold it in the Houston Astrodome.”

It’s typical for glowing tributes to flow for the recently deceased, but all these years later hardly a negative word surrounds mention of Marr, who won the 1965 PGA Championship and later smoothly transitioned into broadcasting. Sean McManus, the son of legendary sports broadcaster Jim McKay and a production assistant for Marr at ABC, said, “Of all the guys my father worked with, I don’t think there was anybody he had a better relationship with outside the booth than Davey Marr.
