Couples scores double bogey at iconic 10th at Riviera for third time in 111 rounds

LOS ANGELES — Not that it ranked ahead of Jordan Spieth’s 79 in the shock department, but Fred Couples making a double-bogey at the short, par-4 10th in Thursday’s first round of the Northern Trust Open caught your attention.

After all, he’s Mr. Riviera, no?

Why, yes he is. An annual competitor since 1982, Couples is teeing it up for the 32nd time at Riviera in this tournament. (He also played the LA stop in 1982 and 1998 when it was held elsewhere, and he missed the 2007 tournament.)

Now records aren’t available for the 1982 tournament, but going back to 1984, Couples has now played 111 rounds at Riviera in this tournament and he made just his third double-bogey at the iconic 10th.
