College kids learn hard lessons in Round of 16 at U.S. Four-Ball

SAN FRANCISCO – It was a tough morning for college types at the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship on Tuesday at Olympic Club’s Lake Course.

Two powerhouse teams – Stanford’s Maverick McNealy and Viraat Badhwar, medalists in qualifying, and SMU’s Bryson Dechambeau and Austin Smotherman – were knocked out in the morning’s Round of 16. And Arizona State coach Tim Mickelson, Phil’s younger brother, was sent packing as well.

SMU did send a team to the afternoon quarters, but it wasn’t the one everyone was expecting. Brooks Price and Draegen Majors, who graduated two years apart at SMU (2012 and 2010, respectively), took down McNealy and Badhwar, two players coming off the Cardinal’s winning effort at the Pac-12 Championship last week in Washington.
