Chances remain for Sunday match between world's best

SAN FRANCISCO – Perhaps in its 17th edition, the WGC Match Play Championship will find success in fielding the world’s top two players in the final game. The possibility is still alive, thanks to rousing victories Thursday by Rory McIlroy (2 up over Brandt Snedeker) and Jordan Spieth (4 and 3 over Matt Every), but given the switch to a new round-robin format, tournament officials will first savor what will be delivered in Friday’s third round.

Win-or-go-home games are set with McIlroy vs. Billy Horschel, and Spieth vs. Lee Westwood at TPC Harding Park.

“Looking forward to it.
