J.J. Spaun secured an improbable U.S. Open Championship at a rainy Oakmont Country Club on Sunday for the first major win of his career.
Spaun (-1) bogeyed five of his first six holes in the final round, but bounced back with three birdies and one bogey the rest of the way. The 34-year-old is the fifth-oldest player in major history to win after never previously recording a top-20 major finish, according to ESPN Research.
After Robert MacIntyre finished as the clubhouse leader at 1 over creating a four-way tie at the top, Spaun responded with a birdie on 17 to take the solo lead.
