After bad ruling, Adam Scott benefits from make-good in China

SHANGHAI – Australian Adam Scott will think twice before picking up a ball again after incurring a one-shot penalty that took more than 30 minutes post-round to resolve.

Scott was playing the par-3 sixth hole Thursday in the WGC-HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club when his ball came to rest on what he thought was fairway, near the green.

With lift, clean and place rules in effect, Scott picked up his ball to clean it and then replaced it. After hitting his chip, he looked back down the fairway and suspected that the area from which he just chipped might not be fairway.
