Ali, who was born in Oakland and raised in Hayward, earned an Academy Award Sunday night for his tender-hearted supporting performance in “Moonlight,” which claimed the best-picture prize. His win came only four days after he and his wife, Amatus Sami-Karim, welcomed their first child into the world — a daughter, Bari Najma Ali.
Ali was a basketball standout at Hayward’s Mount Eden High School and entered Saint Mary’s College on a basketball scholarship.
