Warriors to Keep Golden State Name After Moving to San Francisco

Warriors team president, and recent Hall of Fame inductee, Rick Welts appeared on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac” podcast and confirmed that the team will keep Golden State in their name after their move to the Chase Center in San Francisco in 2019.

The Warriors’ franchise has gone by many different names during their history.

They began as the Philadelphia Warriors in 1946, and kept that name until they moved out west to San Francisco in 1962 when they became the San Francisco Warriors.

The franchise began playing nearly all of their home games in Oakland during the 1971-72 season, and they changed their name to the Golden State Warriors in an attempt to represent all of California.
