When Steve Kerr interviewed for the Golden State Warriors coaching job in the summer of 2014, he brought to the meeting a manifesto containing his clinical vision for how the Warriors could win. One of the tenets in Kerr’s recipe was the imperative to play the game at a relentlessly fast pace, something he learned from one of his coaching mentors, Gregg Popovich. Back when Kerr played for Pop, the Spurs had young thoroughbreds in Tony Parker, the Manu Ginobili, and Tim Duncan who could run the floor and create easy shots for themselves by speeding up the game.
