Joe Montana 'Catch' statue at Levi's vandalized; suspect arrested

Joe Montana never suffered a face mask violation this egregious, to use the word that's so in vogue these days on NFL broadcasts.

The 49ers confirmed Wednesday that a person vandalized Montana's statue at Levi's Stadium after Monday night's 49ers-Seahawks game. The damage appeared to be limited to Joe's face mask, which had been either snapped off or cut off with a tool.

"Security personnel apprehended the individual soon thereafter and the Santa Clara Police Department arrested the individual on felony vandalism charges," 49ers Director of Corporate Communications Roger Hacker said in an email to SFGATE.

The statue is part of a two-piece sculpture commemorating "The Catch," the famous touchdown in the 1982 NFC Championship Game that sent the 49ers to their first Super Bowl.
