Stephen Curry, gritty defense pushes Warriors past Blazers in 103-88 victory

Golden State is back with an impressive 103-88 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

The Warriors seemed to lose themselves after their 10-game winning streak came to a heartbreaking end—they’ve lost five out of their past seven games. After the past two weeks, questions about whether they were truly Western Conference playoff contenders began to surface. They needed a win.

With their newly elected All-Star starting point guard leading the way, the Dubs got the “dub” that they desperately needed. Stephen Curry carried the Warriors’ offense with 38 points, shooting 13 of 23 from the floor. He also added eight assists and seven rebounds in the victory. The other “Splash Brother,” Klay Thompson, and David Lee both had 17 points each.

Coach Mark Jackson subbed Draymond Green in for Andrew Bogut at center. Surprising, but it worked! Golden State was +12 when Green was on the court.

After Coach Jackson said that the Warriors’ defense was “falling asleep,” they definitely woke up. Golden State won the game due to their strong defensive effort. Lee and Andre Iguodala both protected the rim with double digit rebounds. Lee had 12 rebounds and Iguodala grabbed 10.

Lee’s tough defense held LaMarcus Aldridge to a 2-of-14 shooting night—he finished the game with 10 points. The Warriors also held Damian Lillard, the Oakland Native, to 16 points.

At halftime, the Trail Blazers led 55-54, but once the second half started the Warriors took off. During the third quarter, the Blazers scored a total of just 12 points. Once the fourth started, Golden State took off on a 12-2 run to take a 22-point lead. Portland was able to cut the lead to single digits, but with three minutes remaining, Curry hit two big shots that pushed their lead back to double digits. They won the game 103-88.

The Warriors have a day to rest before they play John Wall and the Washington Wizards at home on Tuesday, January 28.
