99designs Hosts a Competition to Rebrand the Golden State Warriors

It’s official - the Golden State Warriors are moving to San Francisco.

The team that used to be known as the San Francisco Warriors will be returning to the city after spending the last 43 years in Oakland (not counting the 1996-97 season, which the Warriors played in San Jose thanks to Oracle Arena renovations).

After the Warriors’ failed attempt to move to Piers 30-32, the team has announced plans to relocate to a new site in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood. The team is expected to be playing in the new Mission Bay arena by 2018.

99designs - a design company based in San Francisco - is hosting a (highly unofficial) contest to help the Warriors pick their next logo. 99designs has created a fun way for the team’s community to get involved in a major decision - in this case, the Warriors’ big move to San Francisco and the possible name change.

Here are a few examples:

Owner Joe Lacob announced last month that the team will reach out to fans about the possibility of returning to the ‘San Francisco Warriors’ name, and with that name change would likely come a new (or at least modified) logo.

99designs’ Golden State Warriors logo design contest has already begun. You are no longer able to submit designs, but you can vote for the design that you like by following the link above or the one at the end of this article.

The winner of this contest brings home $500, but there’s plenty of competition:

“We host these (highly unofficial) contests to our community of over 280,000 designers, often after a team’s rebrand has been in the news or when a move or new name is coming up,” said Kyra Harrington, 99designs’ PR Coordinator. “For example, when the New Orleans Hornets were rumored to be renamed the New Orleans Pelicans, we ran a contest to give fans a taste of what the logo could look like.”

For the New Orleans Pelicans logo contest, 99designs received 1,033 designs from 197 designers. You can check out the winner of this contest's design on their page: TinBacicDesign™.

“These contests are a great way to get fans of the team engaged; they can enter the competition and vote on their favorite,” said Harrington.

I’ve looked over the designs that have been chosen for voting, and if I do say so myself, they’re amazing. I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing one of these used for the Warriors logo if they decide to change the name.
