Paul Johnson honors late Georgia Southern broadcaster Nate Hirsch

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson paid tribute Monday to the late Nate Hirsch, the longtime radio voice of Georgia Southern sports. Hirsch, who called Eagles football, basketball and baseball games starting in 1970 through 2006, died Sunday.

Johnson knew Hirsch from his nine years in Statesboro (1983-86 as an assistant, 1997-2001 as head coach), where he was a part of four Division I-AA national championships.

“Nate was one of my all-time favorite guys,” Johnson said. “He was the voice of the Eagles, Georgia Southern, for when we first started football and all the way through, and I can’t think of a guy who loved his school more and did more to try to represent them.
