ATLANTA – LaPorscha Wells won the hammer throw and finished third in the shot put, while Lauren Sims set a school record in the javelin throw on Day 1 of the Georgia Tech Invitational Friday evening. Seven events were completed on the first day with 10 final events slated for Saturday at George Griffin Track on the campus of Tech.
Wells, a junior from Augusta, Ga., topped the 26 hammer throw competitors with a heave of 60.26m (197-8). That was her third-longest throw. Teammates Tracy Dorcemont and Alysiah Whittaker were sixth and ninth, respectively, with throws of 53.
