Basketball: men stay alive, women likely out conference tournament

The women’s basketball team fell to Appalachian State, 72-69. Freshman guard Madison Newby led the team with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Junior forward Haley Gerrin contributed 16 points and 4 blocks in the effort as well. Mountaineers junior guard and Duluth, Georgia native Joi Jones scored a game leading 28 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. On Senior Day, seniors Morgan Jackson and Kennesha Nichols logged in 14 and 17 minutes, respectively.

“We can look back at the 25 turnovers and the extremely costly ones in the final minute and see why we lost today,” head coach Sherwin Baldwin-Tener said after the loss, according to Georgia State Sports Communications.
