Cheerleading leads to more concussions than football?

The Knight Commission is a watchdog of sorts for college athletics, and its meeting Tuesday — dealing with the health, safety and well-being of college athletes — elicited a comment from an official at an SEC school that cheerleading had led to more concussions than football.

Arne Duncan, the former United States Secretary of Education, is the new co-vice chairman for the Commission, and he asked about the level of concern for concussions in specific sports. That led to this statement from Ron Courson, who is Georgia’s director of sports medicine.

“Over the last four years, we’ve had more concussions in cheerleading than we have in football and soccer,” said Courson, who has been at Georgia since 1995.
