In the neighboring south Texas community just beyond Hurricane Harvey’s widespread hold, a small Catholic university with a young and developing football program tried to stay focused and rev up for the upcoming year.

Just last weekend, the Cardinals, who kick off of the season Saturday at Fresno State, canceled practice because of a hurricane threat.

And though Incarnate Word and San Antonio, where the university is located, avoided the intense downpour and high winds that devastated other parts of Texas, some Cardinals players did not completely escape the wreckage of Hurricane Harvey.

Of Incarnate Word’s 93-player roster, 22 come from Texas towns and cities that were heavily impacted by the Category 4 hurricane.
