When the FSU football team took the field against Louisiana Tech the last Saturday of August in 1999, they did so coming off a spot playing for the national title the season before and came into the final season of the 20th century as the top ranked team in the two major preseason polls that had been released.
When the Seminoles walked off the field the following January 4th after winning their 12th straight game – the last one coming against Virginia Tech – head coach Bobby Bowden’s team did something that no team in college football history had done before: gone wire to wire as the top ranked team in the country in route to the national title.
