Reirden started his coaching career in 2004-05 with the Houston Aeros during the lock out season. He was injured, but still wanted to play a role with the team so Todd McLellan assigned him coaching responsibilities. His responsibilities, were to guide some of the younger guys and things clicked.
In 2007-08, he’d serve as an assistant coach with his Alma Mater, the Bowling Green State University Falcons. His AHL gig would come with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Reirden served as an assistant to Dan Bylsma for one season in 2008-09, but once Bylsma was promoted, Reirden got the head coaching job for the 2009-10 season.
