Around two years ago, the Panthers were in the midst of making many changes. Right after the Cats had won their division and made the playoffs, they not only made many changes to their roster, but also made changes throughout the organization.
They completely changed their jerseys, and right before the season ended, they named Derek MacKenzie as the new captain of the Florida Panthers.
While it was a little bit strange that the Panthers decided to give the captaincy to a 35-year-old whose role was primarily restricted to the fourth line and penalty kill, many accepted it.
