FIU relief pitcher Williams Durruthy was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 31st round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday afternoon.
Durruthy was 3-3 with a 2.81 ERA and a team-leading nine saves last season. The junior right-hander made 27 appearances, pitched 32 innings while allowing 22 hits, 10 earned runs and walking 20 batters. Durruthy struck out 35 batters and opponents hit .185 against him.
Durruthy becomes the third FIU player in the last two years to be drafted by the Diamondbacks. Last year Arizona selected former FIU third baseman Josh Anderson and former FIU pitcher/outfielder Jason Morozowski.
