ATLANTA -- The 25th SEC Championship Game kicked off Saturday, and the conference made sure to commemorate the first two coaches to compete in college football’s first postseason conference championship.
Former Gators coach Steve Spurrier joined former Alabama coach Gene Stallings and former SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer in conducting the ceremonial coin toss between the two programs. Kramer created the SEC Championship Game, which Alabama won 28-21 over Spurrier’s UF squad. Kramer, 86, recounted Stallings’ initial opposition to the conference championship, although the former Crimson Tide head coach was satisfied with the outcome and deemed the 1992 contest his most memorable game.
