GAINESVILLE — Florida coach Jim McElwain views fourth down unlike many coaches.
Facing fourth-and-goal from the Vanderbilt 5 during a scoreless game, McElwain passed up a 22-yard field-goal attempt for a Brandon Powell reverse that was stopped for a two-yard gain.
McElwain said he based the decision on his aggressive play-calling philosophy, not the Gators' kicking game struggles.
"I'm a guy who believes in going for it. It obviously backfired," McElwain said. "I expect our guys to make it on fourth down and we didn't. That's something we'll continue to work at.
