Gators trying to strike balance on offense

Florida’s season-opening 24-7 win over UMass had mixed results for the Luke Del Rio-led offense.

The two-time college transfer managed the Gators offense efficiently, with touchdown passes to Brandon Powell and Antonio Callaway being enough to slip past an upset-minded Minutemen squad.

But it was how often Del Rio slung it that revealed the most about coach Jim McElwain’s vision for the offense.

Del Rio attempted 44 passes against UMass -- more than any Gators quarterback during McElwain’s inaugural season in Gainesville.

Former UF quarterback Will Grier, who opted to transfer to West Virginia in January, attempted 42 passes in Florida’s fourth-quarter comeback victory against Tennessee on Sept.
