GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The topic reminded Florida coach Jim McElwain of a funny story about his friend Sonny Lubick, who was coach at Colorado State from 1993-2007.
“Every year before recruiting visits, he had a contractor buddy who would give him a backhoe for a couple of months,” McElwain said as we sat in his office. “He would put a lot of tape around it and put on a hard hat.”
It was Lubick’s way of trying to convince recruits that new facilities were just around the corner.
“The day after recruiting was over, the backhoe would go,” McElwain said, laughing.
