Opposing offenses puncturing Owls defense for big plays

During the second quarter of its 28-23 loss to Charlotte on Sunday, Florida Atlantic called for an all-out blitz against an empty set. It left its five defensive backs matched up against five receivers.

The 49ers responded with a middle screen to Austin Duke, a pass made seconds before linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair could record a sack. Duke caught the ball, slid behind a block and ran untouched for a 69-yard touchdown.

The score tied the seasonlong play the Owls' defense had given up in 2016. FAU gave up a 69-yard touchdown run to Southern Illinois in the season opener.
