International youth soccer tournament kicks off Friday in Frisco

The 11th annual edition of Generation adidas Cup opens Friday at the Toyota Soccer Center, a gathering of 20 MLS academies and 12 international Under-17 clubs.

During the nine-day competition, teams will dispute 30 games split between the Champions Division and the Premier Division for teams not qualifying to higher division.

Games will be broadcast by MLSSoccer.com. Playoffs and finals will be played under VAR (video-reviewed) format.

"Generation adidas Cup is a world-class competition, offering MLS academies an opportunity to compete against some of the most talented juvenile players", Alfonso Mondelo, MLS sports director, said.

In addition to the lower-tier team from Argentina's River Plate --current and three-time tournament champion--, competitors in the Champions Division include Tigres UANL, Monterrey, Pachuca and Tijuana (Mexico); Flamengo and Atlético Paranaense (Brazil); Independiente del Valle (Ecuador); Real Madrid (Spain); Monaco (France); Eintracht Frankfurt (Germany) and Matsumoto Yamaga (Japan).
