When Jay Gruden arrived in Washington DC to be the new Head Coach of the Redskins, he was burdened with a quarterback, Robert Griffin III, who did not fit his system. Gruden knew it from the get-go, but the team had invested so much money into Griffin that is was going to be hard for Gruden to bench him or release him. Luckily, a Griffin injury opened the door for Gruden to anoint Kirk Cousins as his starting QB. Cousins had not been drafted by the Gruden regime, but he still fit his system better than Griffin did.
