“It was probably watching Doncaster Rovers at Belle Vue.” Mason Holgate is considering his earliest footballing memory.

“I was definitely one of those youngsters that was kicking a ball around as soon as I could walk. I used to get shouted at for kicking it in the house and breaking things - I got barred from my grandma’s house for smashing something!

“My dad used to take me to watch Doncaster Rovers when I was young and I played for a Sunday League club called Scawthorpe Scorpions from when I was about six. I was there about a year or two, and then Barnsley came up.
