Everton boss Ronald Koeman admits Ross Barkley has been given a 'wake-up call' after being dropped: 'He needs to show what he can do'

Ronald Koeman has described his decision to drop Ross Barkley as 'a wake-up call' and urged the Everton midfielder to learn from the lesson.

It has been a difficult season so far for Barkley. He did not feature in either of the England squads that Sam Allardyce or Gareth Southgate named and last weekend at Manchester City, he saw a run of 55 consecutive appearances in the Premier League brought to an end when he was never brought on in the 1-1 draw.

Koeman, who has revealed Leighton Baines has suffered a setback in his recovery from a hamstring problem, had given no indication whether Barkley will return to the team for Saturday's trip to Burnley but he is pleased with how the 22-year-old has responded to the jolt.
