EDMONTON - With new coaches to offer guidance and a one-year, $3.9-million contract in the bank, defenceman Justin Schultz is approaching the next NHL season as a new start with the Edmonton Oilers.
Schultz and the Oilers reached an agreement on Wednesday to avoid an appointment with an arbitrator.
“You always want a longer term deal, but I definitely need the year to prove that I deserve it,” Schultz said. “This is going to be a big year for me to try to take a step forward. It’s a fresh start for me.
“I haven’t had the greatest of years there and this is another chance for me to prove what I’ve got.
