The Edmonton Oilers needed a defenceman to eat up big minutes and, hopefully, be a top pairing guy. On Wednesday, the start of the National Hockey League’s unrestricted free agent signing period, the Oilers signed Andrej Sekera.
Sekera went to Los Angeles Kings at last season’s trade deadline, but he did not finish the season after he injured his knee. The ex-Carolina Hurricanes blueliner, who just turned 29, signed a six-year deal with the Oilers for $33 million.
Sekera and former Oilers’ defenceman Jeff Petry were the hot items at the trade deadline, with Sekera going to the Kings and Petry to the Montreal Canadiens.
