Fort Lauderdale, Fla — Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli refused to give up the team’s 16th overall pick in Friday night’s draft for Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner, who instead went to the Buffalo Sabres in a deal announced Friday morning.
“Not trading a first-round pick for a goalie,” Chiarelli said Friday at a pre-draft media briefing.
Buffalo acquired Lehner from the Senators in exchange for their No. 21 pick in this year’s draft and forward David Legwand.
Chiarelli indicated he plans keep the Oilers’ extra pick in the first round, even though he said that player could be “three years away” from ice time in the NHL.
