Fast forward to 2016-17. The current Oilers find themselves in the thick of the Pacific Division type race. The Oilers have already clinched a playoff spot, but are battling for home-ice advantage in the playoffs.
It is a four-team race between the Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Calgary Flames. Edmonton fought their way to 95 points to be second in the Pacific, one point behind the Ducks for first. After defeating the Sharks Thursday, the Oilers are two points clear of the Sharks and are five points ahead of the Flames, who hold the first-place Wild Card spot.
