When it was announced that Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock would accompany GM Ken Holland to the world championship in the Czech Republic, many wondered why Babcock would be doing such things for the organization if he was planning to leave when his contract expires June 30.
Holland wasn’t among those optimists.
“I wouldn’t read anything into it,” Holland suggested, and apparently he was right.
On Friday Holland revealed that the team has granted Babcock permission to speak with other teams immediately, even though under the terms of his contract they didn’t have to do so until July 1.
