SEATTLE, Wash. (EMUEagles.com) — Former Eastern Michigan University right handed pitcher Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) was selected in the 23rd round, 693rd overall, by the Seattle Mariners in the 2017 MLB Draft, Wednesday afternoon, June 14. Delaplane becomes the first EMU player since 2012 to hear his name called in the draft.
Overall, Delaplane is the 74th EMU player all-time to be drafted into the MLB, and just the second to the Mariners, the first being Ken Spratke in 1984. The 23rd round is also the earliest an Eagle player has been selected since Jimmy Gulliver went in the 20th round in 2009.
