The Drake University volleyball team was defeated by Memphis, 3-1, in the season opener for both teams in the first match of the EIU Panther Classic Friday afternoon.
Drake won the first set, 25-18, but then suffered setbacks of 25-15, 25-23, 25-20 in the ensuing sets.
After committing nine attacking errors in the first set, the Tigers made just 11 errors in the final three sets to hold off the Bulldogs.
Junior Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) led Drake with 12 kills in the loss while freshman Haley Bush (Waukee, Iowa) added 11 kills.
