DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa native Jimmy Simpson broke the American record in the 2-mile while Sam Kendricks broke the Drake Relays and Drake Stadium record at Hy-Vee Night at the Drake Relays on Friday in front of an energized Drake Stadium.
Simpson, the bronze medalist in the 1,500 meters at the 2016 Olympics, shattered Shannon Rowbury's old American record as the Webster City, Iowa, native crossed the line in 9:16.78, topping Rowbury's previous best by almost four seconds. Simpson used a final lap of 63 seconds to add the American outdoor 2-mile record to her list of accolades that includes the American indoor two-mile record.
