Tigers Spring Training Position Battles To Watch (And Who Will Win)

Spring training is finally here for the Detroit Tigers. Pitchers and catchers reported last Friday, and the team will hold its first full squad workout Tuesday. The Tigers missed the playoffs last season, but they're hoping to change their fortunes and return to the postseason for the fifth time in the last six years. While much of the Tigers' roster is set, barring any injuries, there are a few positions up for grabs.

With that in mind, here are the Tigers Spring Training Battles To Watch (And Who Will Win).

Backup Catcher:

James McCann is the starter, that much is certain. But the backup catcher spot will come down to either Bryan Holaday or Jarrod Saltalamacchia. The latter isn't that great defensively, but he can hit and brings value as a lefty. Saltalamacchia is the veteran, although he has been inconsistent throughout his MLB career. Holaday is out of options, and there's a good chance he wouldn't clear waivers if he doesn't win the job.

Winner: Saltalamacchia
The Tigers brought in the veteran and he's an ideal compliment to McCann. Don't be surprised if the Tigers end up trading away Holaday.

No. 5 Starter:

The top four starters are clearly Justin Verlander, Jordan Zimmermann, Anibal Sanchez and Mike Pelfrey. There are five others with at least a shot at winning the job in Daniel Norris, Matt Boyd, Shane Greene, Buck Farmer Micael Fulmer.

Winner: Norris
Barring something crazy, Norris should be the team's fifth starter. The 22-year old posted a 2-1 record with a 3.68 ERA after coming over in the David Price trade.

Last Roster Spot:

The Tigers roster is mostly set, but the final roster spot is somewhat up for grabs. Mike Aviles is the favorite, but players like outfielder Tyler Collins and infielder Dixon Machado could surprise.

Winner: Aviles
The Tigers gave Aviles $2 million this offseason for a reason, although none of that is guaranteed. He's a versatile player, who can contribute at nearly any position. He's not a great hitter, but his defensive abilities should give him the final spot on the roster. For more Tigers rumors, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app

Bullpen:

There are two spots up for grabs at the back of the bullpen, and there will be plenty of competition for those two spots. Bruce Rondon and Drew VerHagen are the two favorites, but don't rule out Green, Farmer, Boyd and Fulmer getting a shot on the roster as long-relievers. There's also Angel Nisbit and Montreal Robertson who could earn spots as well.

Winners: Rondon & VerHagen
For now, it looks like Rondon and VerHagen will snag the last two spots. Of course with so many others in the mix, that could easily end up not being the case.
