Wynton Bernard could begin season with Detroit Tigers

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Wynton Bernard could be with the Detroit Tigers when they start the regular season April 5 in Miami, manager Brad Ausmus acknowledged.

Bernard has been discussed as a short-term option with Cameron Maybin out with a broken left wrist.

Bernard, 25, hit .301 with 29 doubles, 78 runs and 43 stolen bases in 135 games at Double-A Erie last season. He also had eight triples, four home runs and 36 RBIs.

“In the short term, that’s why we’ve talked about it,” Ausmus said. “Because I think it’s something we should consider.
