LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Yankees, 6-2, on Friday at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium, falling to 5-7 (with two ties) in Grapefruit League play.

What happened

Facing Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, the Tigers' top prospects — center fielder Riley Greene and first baseman Spencer Torkelson — added to their case for making the Opening Day roster.

Greene opened the bottom of the third inning with a triple to center field, and Torkelson followed with an eight-pitch walk.

Cole, the 2021 American League Cy Young runner-up, threw six pitches to Greene in the at-bat.
