Tigers steal Paul Sewald from division rival Guardians in unexpected reliever trade

The Detroit Tigers are acquiring right-handed reliever Paul Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians, as first reported by Chris McCosky of The Detroit News.

The Tigers will give up a player to be named later or cash considerations to the Guardians, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. Petzold also reported that right-hander Matt Manning has been designated for assignment to create room for Sewald on the Tigers' 40-man roster.

This trade pickup is a bit puzzling from the Tigers' perspective, as Sewald has struggled with shoulder injuries all season. Most recently, he was diagnosed with a moderate teres major strain after undergoing an MRI during the All-Star break.
