Tigers signing infielder to compete for bench job in spring

If Dixon Machado is replacing Ian Kinsler as starting second baseman, who is replacing Dixon Machado as utility infielder?

One candidate could be Ronny Rodriguez, who is expected to sign a minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers this week.

Rodriguez announced the news on his Instagram page Friday. The team has not confirmed the signing.

Rodriguez, 25, is primarily an infielder, but he's played every position except pitcher, catcher and left fielder during his minor-league career with the Cleveland Indians.

The Tigers waived super-utility man Andrew Romine last month, so they could have more than one opening on the bench, depending on how they want to fill the roles.
