DETROIT -- The analytics department at Comerica Park is right down the hallway from general manager Al Avila's office.

So when Ron Gardenhire arrived for his interview, that was the first place he went.

And when he returned Friday to be announced as the Detroit Tigers' 38th manager, Gardenhire went back again.

"I just went through the analytics department and I told every one of those guys, I love 'em, because they're going to help me," Gardenhire said.

Gardenhire, 59, embraced his old-school reputation during his introductory press conference on Friday afternoon, but he also emphasized his capacity to learn and grow.
